Job Advert Summary
In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’ the Research Divisions, Units, Institutes and Centres of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) undertake policy-oriented research from its offices in Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, and Pietermaritzburg. Our public purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The Inclusive Economic Development (IED) division undertakes research to transform educational outcomes and increase economic participation. It recognises that education and the economy have long been linked, and conducts research to understand educational performance and improve learning outcomes and to interrogate wider social, spatial and structural obstacles to economic participation.

IED is looking to appoint a suitably qualified person to take on the data management and analysis responsibilities for The Imprint of Education (TIE) longitudinal cohort study, conducted in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. The purpose of the study is to track graduate outcomes, map their livelihood trajectories and understand impact on their individual (family and peers), community (of origin and of current residence) and societal (local, regional and national) worlds. The successful candidate will be working primarily on quantitative panel data collected over 5-years (2020 to 2024).

The successful candidate will be appointed for a period of 19 months. The position can be based in any of the HSRC’s offices, namely; Cape Town, Durban or Pretoria.

Data Analyst (1 Position)

Minimum Requirements
A PhD degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, or social science with a quantitative background for appointment at Specialist level, a Masters degree for appointment at Senior Research Manager level
Three years of research-related experience post PHD or 6 years of experience post Masters.
At least 7 academic publications (or 3 publications for appointment at Senior Research Manager level)
Knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical packages for analysing datasets (such as Excel, SPSS, STATA, SAS, R, Python).
Demonstrable mastery of basic computer skills (typical office suite software); MS Access and other database management programmes and capabilities to apply these programmes in survey data management and analysis.
Experience and strengths in statistical analysis.
Experience in creating interactive data and graphs.
Experience in documentation of data procedures.
Experience and understanding how measurement instruments, particularly large-scale surveys, relate to databases and data extractions.
Excellent writing skills.
Excellent leadership, team, communication and people skills are required, as this is a cross-cutting role.
Intellectual and personal integrity, imagination, adaptability and drive.

Duties & Responsibilities
Setting up and/or initiating linkages between complimentary databases.
Developing data quality control and quality assurance Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Extracting data from survey databases using query language and advanced database tools.
Guarding and protecting the organization’s data, ensuring that the databases produce consistent, correct and reusable data.
Performing data manipulations, validations and analysis for report writing and ad hoc requests.
Supporting and informing processes to upgrade and test survey databases.
Documentation of data management processes.
Planning and managing databases for new surveys on aspects of the Alumni Tracer Survey.
Delivering high quality results to budget and to meet deadlines.
Communicating research findings in the form of report writing, databases, data tables, figures and diagrams.
Communicate research findings in academic publications
Lead junior researchers who will assist in the above responsibilities.
